Workplace Behaviour Workshop

Posted last November 18, 2012, 6:22 pm in Services report article

Workplace bullying is increasingly the source of legal claims & it is difficult for organisations to determine what steps they actually need to take to try to prevent workplace bullying occurring & protect themselves from these claims.  Workplace bullying is on Australia’s national agenda, and organisations need to take a proactive approach to workplace issues, such as bullying.  Organisations should have workplace bullying & grievance resolution policies in place and provide comprehensive training for employees and managers.

Recent studies have found that workplace bullying & harassment—especially in the public sector—is rampant.  Research conducted found that as many as  70 percent of employees were currently being bullied or had been bullied in the past; also, of the remaining sample, just over  13 percent had witnessed workplace bullying.

What is the cost?

It is the silent epidemic that claims billions of dollars in revenue each year, but the biggest cost by far for a company that hires a bully is the trauma experienced by staff in the firing line.  In addition to financial, psychological and health repercussions, conviction under the stalking provisions of the Act can result in imprisonment for up to 10 years.

Workplace experts say that if bullies are not dealt with appropriately, low productivity, absenteeism & even physical illness can eventually seep through into the company's brand name, goodwill and bottom line.  While bad managers can come in many guises, bullies have one thing in common: they deliberately use repeated, continued behaviour that is designed to make a staff member feel bad.

How to get help

The Beyond Bullying Association in Australia estimates between 2.5 million & 5 million people experience some aspects of bullying at work.  If you have 100 employees, & a quarter are exposed to bullying type of behaviour each year, it's going to have a direct affect on your organisation as these people can’t work productively.

We can assist your organisation by providing appropriate training & help you to implement the correct policies and procedures.  We can even train Contact Officers where required—and guide you in your management of these issues.  Our goal is to minimise your risk, if not eliminate it from re-occurring in the future.
